for the first time in weeks, he's home in time to celebrate his 12th birthday. christie smith live with an update on aaron's remarkable journey. christie, good morning. >> good morning, john. there are so many people in martinez following aaron hearn's progress through this whole ordeal. good news to report. that is what you said and he's back home in martinez, arrived one day before his 12th birthday. there is a note on the family door this morning that basically says he's doing well, that the family is trying to find some peaceful family time and they plan to speak with the media tomorrow, on thursday. so we're respecting their privacy and staying back away from the home. there's also a welcome sign on the house this morning. hearn was hit by a piece of shrapnel in the bombing and underwent two surgeries, even visited the site of the bombing before coming home. in the hospital he had a number of visits including visits from members of the oakland a's baseball team, even first lady michelle obama stopped by. we're told he still has almost 100 staples in his leg from that injury. c

christie smith, live at the scene with an update. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. i just spoke briefly with the property owner off camera. he was a little shaken up but just wanted to say that everyone is okay. apparently, what happened here is that someone was inside the garage charging a battery and then heard an explosion a short time later. that's what got this fire moving. the damage pretty bad outside. the weather dry and hot. those were the conditions. firefighters looking into weather that may have played a role into fanning this fire. when they arrived, they say it was already moving. the flames pretty big here. burning sheds and trailers on this property that goes back pretty deep in the back. because there were buildings close by, firefighters quickly called a second alarm and arson investigators were called to the scene. >> cause of the fire, we are believing to be a battery that may have exploded. one of the residents said they were charging a battery and heard it explode and things were on fire. that's what we are working on right now as the cause of the fir

to the restaurant that was heavily damaged in the fire. kristi smith joins us from berkeley outside the restaurant with what it looks like today. kristi, how is the progress? >> reporter: good morning, marla. building permits have changed quite a bit since chez panisse opened, nowodes require a steel fre. frame is for seismic in an earthquake. the two-story steel frame lifted into place on shaddock avenue, hoisted over trees and bolted in place after fabrication in oakland that took two weeks. the world famous chez panisse restaurant founded by food activist with the idea that food should be fresh, sustainable and local. it was damaged by a fire that started under the porch. since then the reopen date shift add couple of times. today i'm told the looks like june 10th hopefully. getting the steel frame in place, that is a major step forward. >> we just craned in the new face of chez panisse. it's completely welded steel for structural, and it's also setp to mimic what's going to go on in the back. so everything you see in terms of the shape of the top with the gable on top, it's going to go all the

. the first major outbreak so far in the bay area this season. nbc bay area's kristi smith joining us live from napa county with the latest on this story. kristi, good morning. >> good morning, jon. sometimes you can smell smoke in the air when the wind blows. that's what conditions are like. it is hot, dry, windy. firefighters dealing with a number of fires burning in wine country. i want to show you what it's like. this is what the hills are like. this is the kind of stuff that's burning. can you hear it crunch, just completely dry. they are concerned about a number of fires specifically, too. they tell me so far one home suffered damage in another outbuilding a barn was burned. in all, four fires burning overnight. for you they tell me it's two causing concern for cal fire. silverado burned 75 acres near the silverado trail. that was before midnight. full containment on that around midnight today. in sonoma, the larger fire has burned 125 acres of woodland. it's also burned very close to some vineyards there. cal fire wasn't supposed to be staffed up yet but they brought in crews two we

recovery. nbc bay area kristi smith joining us live in martinez where aaron hern's mom and dad just wrapped up a news conference. kristi, it's been nothing tort-of- short of a nonstop adventure for this young man. how is he doing? >> under the circumstances he's doing well, home and recovering. we heard from his parents and we know this is going to take a long time. there are physical scars and emotional ones as well, considering what aaron saw after the blast. what they are trying to do is take this one step at a time as they recover from these horrific events they went through. katherine and alan hern thanked local restaurants, businesses, sports teams that supported the family throughout this. they say aaron is improving after suffering a large shrapnel wound to the leg. after the blast katherine got separated from aaron and his dad. she calls it the longest two hours of his life. aaron visited the site before he left boston. he was watching his mom run. he came home after two surgeries just in time for his 12th birthday. he received visits from two oakland a's players and even first lad
